Broomfield Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition

The BSO has hosted this annual competition since 2010. It is open to all Colorado middle and high school students who play an orchestral instrument. Each winner will receive a $500 award and will be invited to perform one movement of a concerto with the BSO on Saturday May 30, 2020 at 7:30pm at the Broomfield Auditorium.

Audition application and the non-refundable $40 application fee must be submitted by Friday January 24, 2020.

Youth Concerto Rules and Regulations

1.   High School Division is open to students in 9th-12th grade, one winner may be chosen. Middle School Division is open to students 6th-8th grade, one winner may be chosen. Former winners must wait at least 12 months to apply for the same division.  Must be Colorado resident.
2. The competition is open to all orchestral instruments.
3.  A YouTube video/audio link no older than 6 months must be submitted. Applicants should play one memorized, accompanied movement of a concerto or a single-movement work written for solo instrument and orchestra.
4. All applications, videos, letters of recommendation, and non-refundable application fees must be received by the published deadline.
5. The BSO has a limited budget for parts and scores, and soloist music selection is subject to approval. The piece selected should be readily available for purchase or hire.
6. In-person audition time slots will be sent via email at least one week prior to the audition date, and audition dates, times and location are not negotiable. However, an alternate date will be provided in the event of severe inclement weather.
7. In-person auditions will take place before an Audition Committee.
8. If an applicant is chosen for an in-person audition, they may request to play a complete multi-movement concerto. If approved, the applicant will be asked to play one full movement, and, at the Audition Committee's discretion, portions of other movements. If an applicant auditioning on a multi-movement concerto is chosen as a winner, the BSO may elect to program either the entire concerto or a single movement.
9. Applicants must supply their own accompanist for the in-person audition. One grand piano is available for use at the facility, and piano soloist accompanists will have the use of an electronic keyboard.
10.  Applicants will be judged on mastery of their instrument as well as stage presence.
11.  Winners will be notified within one week after the in-person audition date. The first place Middle School Division winner and the first place High School Division winner will be invited to perform with the Orchestra on Saturday, May 30, 2020.
12. Where a cash prize is awarded, this will be the same amount for both single movement or complete concerto performances. The Audition Committee can decide not to award prizes, if appropriate as determined by the Committee.
13. Transportation to or from the in-person audition, rehearsals, and the concert is not provided.
14. Winners agree to provide a head shot photo and bio that will be used by the BSO for marketing purposes.
15. Winners agree to sign a Release of Audio, Photograph, and Video Agreement.
16. This policy can be amended at any time without prior notice.
17. The decision of the Audition Committee is final.
18.  Winners are required to be available on the following dates.
Tuesday May 12 - rehearsal at church
Tuesday May 19 - rehearsal at church
Tuesday May 26 - dress rehearsal at Audi
Saturday May 30 - concert
19. Failure to abide these rules and regulations may result in an applicant's disqualification.

Important Dates: 

Application materials and fee must be received by Friday January 24, 2020.

Invitations for in-person auditions will be sent via email by Friday February 7, 2020.

In-person auditions will be held on Sunday March 1, 2020 from approximately 1pm-5pm in Lafayette.

Winners will be notified by Friday March 6, 2020.
