Young Artist Competition Rules and Regulations (revised 10/15/2021)

Teacher Recommendation Letter: Must be submitted with your application.

Applicant understands that no applications will be accepted without uploading the Teacher Recommendation Letter.

1. High School Division is open to students in 9th-12th grade, one winner may be chosen. Middle School Division is open to students in 6th-8th grade, one winner may be chosen. Former winners must wait at least 12 months to apply for the same division. Must be Colorado resident.

2. The competition is open to singers and those who play an orchestral instrument, including piano.

3. A YouTube video/audio link no older than 6 months and recorded in one continuous take without editing or manipulation must be submitted. Applicants playing an instrument should perform 5-10 minutes of one accompanied movement of a concerto or a single-movement work for solo instrument and orchestra. Singers are encouraged to prepare song cycles, opera scenes, or groups of arias, rather than one single short work.

4. Instrumentalists or singers may indicate on their application the request to perform a complete multi-movement piece. If chosen for an audition, the applicant will perform one full movement for the Audition Committee, and, at the Committee's discretion, portions of other movements. If an applicant auditioning on a multi-movement piece is chosen as a winner, the BSO may program either the entire work or a single movement.

5. All applications, videos, letters of recommendation, and non-refundable application fees must be received by the published deadline.

6. The BSO has a limited budget, and music selection is subject to approval. The piece should be available in the public domain or obtainable for purchase or rental within reasonable budget limitations.

7. A link to a sign-up sheet for in-person or virtual auditions will be sent via email, and time slots are on a first-come, first-served basis. Audition date and location are not negotiable; however, an alternate date will be provided in the event of severe weather. Any minor must be accompanied by the minor's parent/legal guardian or the parent's adult designee at the in-person audition, rehearsals, and the performance. The only exception shall be when the minor is performing on stage.

8. In-person or virtual auditions will take place before an Audition Committee. Pieces must be accompanied and memorized.

9. Applicants must supply their own accompanist for the in-person or virtual audition. If in person, one grand piano is available for use at the facility, and piano accompanists will have the use of an electronic keyboard.

10. Applicants will be judged on mastery of their musical or vocal instrument, as well as stage presence.

11. The first place Middle School Division winner and the first place High School Division winner will be notified within one week after the in-person or virtual audition date. They will be invited to perform with the Orchestra in some manner to be determined that will comply with city, county, state and national health laws.

12. Where a cash prize is awarded, this will be the same amount for both single movement or complete performances. The Audition Committee can decide not to award prizes, if appropriate as determined by the Committee.

13. Transportation to or from the in-person audition, rehearsals, and the concert is not provided.

14. Winners agree to provide a head shot photo and bio that will be used by the BSO for marketing purposes.

15. Winners agree to sign a Release of Audio, Photograph, and Video Agreement.

16. This policy can be amended at any time without prior notice.

17. The decision of the Audition Committee is final. Winners will be notified of required rehearsal and concert dates.

18. Failure to abide by these rules and regulations may result in an applicant's disqualification.
